Softball and The 2020 Olympics

Softball is a game hundreds of thousands of people in the United States and abroad love to watch and play. So as you can imagine, softball athletes and fans were completely devastated when the game they love so much was eliminated from the Olympics in 2008.

Its been tough to say the least. However, there is some good news that should bring a smile to your face. Thanks to some recent reforms to the game, softball just may have a chance to return to one of the worlds biggest stages in 2020.

In September of 2013 the International Olympic Committee, also known as the IOC, took a vote on this matter. They were trying to decide if sports such as baseball and softball should be played in the summer games. Initially, softball didn’t make the cut. But with even more reforms taking place, things are starting to look a lot brighter for softball lovers all around the globe.

According to ESPN W writer Graham Hays, the outlook is pretty promising. While the Olympics have gone through some changes over the last few years, so has the International Olympic Committee. Shortly after the vote in September 2013, Thomas Bach became the president of the IOC. He replaced Jacques Rogge who was the president for 12 years.

This was basically an out with the old in with the new type of move. When Bach took the position he came in with a new agenda. He created a 40 point reform plan designed to take the Olympic games to a whole new level. In his plan he touched on several topics. Some of them included Olympic bidding, reform and most importantly, getting both softball and baseball reinstated into the Olympic games for 2020.

Previously the IOC limited how many different sports could be played during the Olympics. Part of Bach’s plan proposed an event based system that focused more on the number of athletes in the Olympics rather than the number of different sports being played. The IOC agreed and the proposal was passed. This one move will play a major role in whether or not we see baseball being played in the 2020 Olympics.

Now the IOC is focusing on reasons why softball should be a part of the Olympics rather than why it should be eliminated. The proposal to focus more on the number athletes who participate in the games has made room for other team sports, mainly softball, to reclaim their spot on the world stage.

The World Baseball Softball Confederation is one of the many organizations that has been fighting for the last few years to bring both baseball and softball back to the Olympics. There have also been both professional and amateur athletes who have made their voices heard on this matter as well. They have been in the trenches lobbying for the game they love to make its return. It looks like all the hard work is paying off.

Watch out 2020 Tokyo Games. Looks like softball is coming back! If you want to get into softball yourself, you’ll need a bat. Fortunately, there are many different softball bat review websites on the web. Be sure to check into your size first and then find the top brands available.
